Base, protein, toppings, sauce — a simple framework for building a bowl you'll actually crave.
The four-part framework
A bowl that actually satisfies isn't complicated — it's balanced. Every good one has the same four parts: a base, a protein, toppings, and a sauce. Get the ratios right and you can eat a different bowl every day of the week without getting bored.
1. Pick your base
The base sets the tone and carries everything else. Rice and grains give you steady energy and hold sauce well; greens keep things light; a half-and-half mix is the move if you want both volume and staying power.
- Rice or grains — filling, great with warm proteins and rich sauces.
- Leafy greens — lighter, best with crunchy toppings and a bright dressing.
- Half grain, half greens — the most reliable default.
2. Choose a protein
This is what turns a side salad into a meal, so don't shortchange it. Grilled chicken and other lean proteins keep things simple; spiced or marinated options bring most of the flavour, so you can go lighter on sauce. Plant-based proteins like chickpeas, beans, or tofu work just as well — pair them with something acidic to keep the bowl from tasting flat.
3. Build your toppings around contrast
The mistake most people make is picking five toppings that all taste and feel the same. Aim for contrast instead: something crunchy, something fresh, something creamy, something sharp. Three or four is plenty.
- Crunch: cucumber, peppers, shredded cabbage, toasted seeds.
- Fresh: tomato, herbs, sprouts, corn.
- Creamy: avocado, cheese, a spoon of hummus.
- Sharp: pickled onion, jalapeno, olives, a squeeze of lime.
4. Finish with sauce — carefully
Sauce ties the bowl together, but it's also where a light lunch quietly becomes a heavy one. One sauce, well chosen, beats three drizzled on top of each other. Creamy sauces suit grain-heavy bowls; vinaigrettes and yogurt-based sauces suit green ones.
Base, protein, contrast, one good sauce. That's the whole formula.
Two combinations to start with
If you want a starting point: rice base, grilled chicken, cucumber, pickled onion, avocado, and a garlic yogurt sauce is hard to beat. For something lighter, go greens, chickpeas, tomato, corn, feta, and a lemon vinaigrette. Build one, notice what you'd change, and make that your default next time.
